Having worked hard alongside local residents to challenge the Lewes Bus Station site being given a Certificate of Immunity from listing, Lewes Town Council was disappointed to learn this week that the Secretary of State for Digital Culture Media and Sport has upheld their decision not to list the former Bus Station and Garage.
Historic England said “We have now taken into account all the representations made, and completed our assessment of the building. Having considered our recommendation, the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has decided not to add the Former Lewes Bus Station to the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.
“Accordingly we can confirm that the Secretary of State hereby certifies that they do not intend to list the building.”
This means that the building cannot be listed for five years, and the local planning authority cannot serve a Building Preservation Notice (BPN) on the building during that period.
The full decision can be seen on Historic England’s website.
